A jingle all night and a jingle all day. Jingle all the way.
SPEAKER_04Hello, jinglers. Hello, gang. Thanks for joining us again.
SPEAKER_03Thanks for joining us and welcome to Jingle All the Way, the number one amateur competitive jingle writing sibling rivalry podcast in the country. Each episode, we write jingles for the same product, perform them for one another, and then let our listeners pick the winner. Each episode has four segments. First, we announce the poll results and feedback from the prior week's contest. Then we move to Inspiration Corner, where we talk about a current or former jingle and why it does or doesn't work. We unveil the jingles that we wrote for this week's product, and then finally we leave it in your capable hands to decide. Heidi, what did I miss? You know, you didn't miss much. You nail it.
SPEAKER_04She's not a girl that misses much. She's not a girl you take home to mother. Wasn't that the um she's American girl?
SPEAKER_00Um you know that I changed that to for Hugo. And I say, he's a very happy dog. He lives with my dad and mother. Oh shout out to Hugo in this week.
SPEAKER_03He is a longtime listener. Absolutely. He's been with us since the beginning. You could say he could, you know, be in the running to be our mascot.
SPEAKER_04He could be our mascot. He could totes be our mascot. And I feel like he gets our vibe.
SPEAKER_03Oh, he totally does. There's no question. I'm sure that he's our he's our biggest canine fan. And there's a lot of canine fans out there. Oh, right. There's a lot of competition for this. But the fact that he's in the running, I think, really speaks to what a special guy he is.
SPEAKER_04His his diehard fannery. Not to be confused with his diehard fanny.
SPEAKER_03Which also is memorable. He's got a diehard fanny. If you know Hugo, you know what we're talking about. Um boy, boy, Hides. Boy Bridge. Have we had an interesting um folks may remember the last product that we jingled for was Haynes, the underwear conglomerate, the undergarment conglomerate. And let's refresh, folks, with how we left things. So um my jingle was first uh last week, and it was go on and stuff your junk into Haynes, boopa.
unknownOh my god.
SPEAKER_04There's so many things about that, but I'll go with mine, which was everybody loves Hanes. And I think you won, if I recall.
unknownI did win.
SPEAKER_03It was it, I was surprised. You know, it surprised me a little bit, I will say. It surprised me a lot bit.
SPEAKER_04What is with people?
SPEAKER_03No, no. Well, I think maybe you're just upset because your voting block finally abandoned you despite weeks and weeks of loyal um adherence to whatever you said. Look, you should have gone with my in the moment notes, which was um everybody loves Hanes.
SPEAKER_04Ooh, no. See, you got too many, you do sound effects after your stuff. And then you put in stuff like crotch and junk, and that's when your people come out in force. You've got troubled individuals. We had one, uh-huh.
SPEAKER_03We had one comment from Kyle, um, friend of the show, and he said, I mean come on.
SPEAKER_04I know, but I was like, wait, what way do you mean that? Because I was like, Yeah, I mean come on.
SPEAKER_03And no, no, he mean I he meant I mean come on, like recognize brilliance when you see it.
SPEAKER_04Is it brilliance though? You've I have talked about this before because you throw around words like brilliance and genius, and I think it's just from now on, I'll add an optional version to all of mine, an optional thing where I then add in like and butts, or and also I just start winning all the time. Don't forget butts.
SPEAKER_03No, no, you won't. No, you won't, because again, your loyal voting block has delivered for you again and again and again. They just finally couldn't get everybody loves haints.
SPEAKER_00You can't even hit the no, you weirdo. You can't make it believable.
SPEAKER_04Everybody loves Hanks. Yeah, that's what it is. And also, we're not that far apart as you know, as far as our winning record. So, how do I have a block and you just have cultured fans? Uh-huh. And butts. That should be like not to get morbid, but if you die before me, I'm gonna put and buts on the back of your.
SPEAKER_03I want to be, I give my permission to be in coffin flop. Um, if they make love to that show, that that bit.
SPEAKER_05Oh my god.
SPEAKER_03If they I I would, you know how people are like, I want to donate my body to science. I would be like, I would like for there to be a coffin flop. Um, and I give I hereby in my last will and testament, give my permission for my body to be used in coffin flop.
SPEAKER_04Me too. Actually, anything that that Tim Robinson wants to do, you know, after go for it. Use me for whatever you want. If he wants to have another hot dog sketch with the hot dog car, but this time it's like I'm a weekend at Bernie's type passenger in the car. If people don't know who he is, he's hysterical. Yeah, and you should watch all of his stuff. Uh, I think you should leave. It's fantastic.
SPEAKER_03Um, Tim, if you're listening, we would love it if you would be a um guest judge for um our program. Anytime you're ready, we would absolutely love to have you. Um, we would be honored uh to hear what you think.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Oh my God, that would be fantastic. Could you that's somebody I would gush about? We have to, okay, okay. Well, we have to manifest it. We're gonna manifest. I'm putting it out into the universe now.
SPEAKER_03Now, in right this very moment, he was like, everybody loves paints, booba, and butts and butts, and a real jazzy and butts.
SPEAKER_04Oh, that's good. That's good. Well, now well, if you're not a third grader and you'd like us to move on to something different, we can.
SPEAKER_03We'll do that now. Um, we that's my cue to move it along. So we I have inspo this week. So we're gonna break some ground in this uh in this particular episode of Jingle All the Way. So Heidi Yes ma'am. You're gonna have to name this tune in one note.
SPEAKER_04Okay. Give it to me. Massage ready. Okay, move on. Okay. Um do it again. Um is it a bum sound that they're saying, or is it just that note? Note it can't be my baloney has a first name because we've done that already.
SPEAKER_03Yep. You'll never get it not in one hit million, billion, gajillion years.
SPEAKER_04Can you give me the next note? Um that's what it is? I don't know. Wait, yes, you do. Do it one more time. Um B C Yes. Really?
SPEAKER_03Bum bum bum. Yes. Yes. Now, here's why this is groundbreaking.
SPEAKER_04Because it's super, super memorable.
SPEAKER_03It's well, so technically, that's not a jingle. Technically, it's a sonic logo. And do you know the story behind the bum bum bum? Do you know how that came to be?
SPEAKER_04No, but now I always think of whenever anybody does like a couple notes like that, I think of co stanza.
SPEAKER_03I used that not terribly long ago. But I don't, so tell me more. Um, okay. So it's a very interesting story. And um, there's a lot of like, oh, oh, oh, how interesting. I said that to myself and everyone around me multiple times as I was looking at this. So, way, way, way back in the day, the origins are early radio, right? It's before it's pre-TB. And it's one of the first ever things like this, right? Um, if there were words, it would be a it would be a jingle, but it's not. It's a technically a sonic logo. So way, way, way, way, way, way, way back in the day. They needed to have a way on radio to tell the local programs that a uh show was over, and that way they could like do whatever local programming or whatever they needed to do, and then it would come back into like the central thing. And there were uh like technical limitations as far as how you had to signal it to them. So they played it on uh chimes, on dinner chimes, right? And it was the acoustic signal that basically said, like, okay, again, this is over, and they played it on dinner chimes, and um it was the notes, which are G, E, and C. NBC's parent company was General Electric Company.
SPEAKER_04Oh smart. G Ecks.
SPEAKER_03So G E C that's that's what it is. Wow, that's smart. I know it is super smart. And then in um 1950, they the US Patent and Trademark Office granted NBC the first ever audio service mark, like a trademark essentially, for the Chimes.
SPEAKER_04Now that's interesting. And I used to work a lot with uh that copyright office in a former role, and you would think that the subject itself would be dry, but it's not. It's very, very interesting, especially as like new rights present themselves. How do you protect them? And then how do you allow them to evolve? Like prior to that, no one was doing it, but then after that, other groups did. Um, what are other well? I don't want to get ahead of you with your research, but like I'm dying to know what some others are, and I'm trying to think of others. Other, like other Sonic logos. Oh, I don't know.
SPEAKER_03I didn't research that. That can be a follow-up. We can make that an addendum. Um, but I just I just researched this. I didn't even think about it. I was just like, oh, interesting. Um, but I will well, no, that's not true. I know that before this one, or around the same time, Wheaties apparently did was like one of the very first companies ever in radio. Before that, people were just like, eat Wheaties or listen to NBC, but they didn't do any variation or anything that would like be, you know, memorable or sticking in your head. Um both of them, I think, were around the same time, which was in like the 20s. I think Wheaties predated um NBC, but not maybe by a ton, and put all of that in pen, not in stone, because that was not the focus of my research. I will say I was trying to look to say who is it attributed to, yeah, like who actually wrote it. And they said um apparently there were people that were singing it, but because according to this, you know, different people have different tonality and everything else, and they wanted it to be consistent. So um they developed an uh RCA engineer Richard Ranger, Richard H. Ranger, um, invented an electromechanical device like a music box that played the three tones at the push of a button. Oh, and then that got adopted so that there was consistency. And again, it was you know played the the same way. But supposedly, John W. Bratton, many people at staffers and engineers supposedly have some hand in developing it, but um John W. Bratton apparently contributed to I developing the audio identifier in 1927.
SPEAKER_04Wow. Isn't that interesting? That is really interesting. And I mean, like I say, I've always found like I don't know why, I mean, we were just talking about like the copyright side of it, but just the way, like, what's next? Will there be a hologram logo that appears? I mean, because had you gone back before that, people would have said, like, a sonic logo, what are you talking about? Or identifying with with sounds or the repeated notes, it wouldn't have been something anybody anticipated. So that's why in the world I love creatives and people who can step into that space and do something different. By the way, I just looked it up. And do you know what some of the common ones right now are that you hear probably every day? Sonic logos? Sonic logos and like, yeah, where the the sound itself is how you would like if you were in the other room and you heard this sound, you'd know exactly what was on the screen.
SPEAKER_03What is this? Oh, no, that's an ear horn. And I'll tell you first of all, what what you're just making random noises that you're doing?
SPEAKER_04No, that's how it sounds.
SPEAKER_00Ambulance.
SPEAKER_03Chicken. No, no, no. I know, okay, I know one for sure. Do you want to know what it is?
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Um, oh, hold on. I forgot.
SPEAKER_00Wait, how does it go? It goes. But that's their song.
SPEAKER_03Right. But that's a sonic logo. And by the way, wait, is it really though, or is it a song? I don't know. I have to assume. I can only assume, but I I know that's a song. You know how much I hate that robot, right? Yeah, the football robot. I like him. He gets me jazzed up. We're getting jazzy. We're gonna go play. I don't like it at all. I don't like how he thinks he his don't stink. I don't clean show, clean show. His robot and butts. Um, wait, no, wait, wait, wait, wait. What's a Sonic logo out there now that you would hear on the TV and you would know what it is? Do they play it on the TV? All the time.
SPEAKER_04The network, the Netflix thing.
SPEAKER_00What Netflix? I can't even make the Yeah, right.
SPEAKER_03Yung. It sounds like multiple yung. What about oh yeah, okay, all right, that makes sense.
SPEAKER_04There's another one though, it said interestingly enough, that the um the uh MGM lion roar.
SPEAKER_03Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, that's true.
SPEAKER_04Which is pretty cool. T Mobile, it says, has like upbeat notes, like which I have to get that in my head. And then Coca-Cola has the pouring sound.
SPEAKER_03You're I think I think I could do all of the sound effects.
SPEAKER_04I think you could do none of them.
SPEAKER_03I think you've just proved who I'm like, I'm like that guy in Police Academy.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, no, like literally, that guy probably he's listening to this, he's like, listen, these people, these youngsters today, they're terrible.
SPEAKER_03Wait, what was his name? Um was it Hightower?
SPEAKER_04Yes, I think so. Mr.
SPEAKER_03Hightower, please, if we've offended you, please come on the show and please write in. You could do all these, but think about it.
SPEAKER_04Uh Seinfeld has that little riffy thing.
SPEAKER_01I wonder chop chop choo. Terrible.
SPEAKER_04I'll honestly terrible. Wait, wait, hold on. I can't.
SPEAKER_01He couldn't have been worse at it.
SPEAKER_04What do you have to say now about your little friend? And he's gonna write again. I mean, come on.
unknownRight?
SPEAKER_04And I'm gonna know that he means it like, I mean, come on.
SPEAKER_03The beauty of that though is that we don't actually know what was in his head. Oh, you know what else? Law and order. Well, wait, oh, that's that's actually very similar to the Netflix one.
SPEAKER_04I wonder if anybody's going to know, but it's different enough that you know. As you know. Well, and what about the fact that HBO just has static now? You know that HBO is the static sound. The k sh.
unknownYeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_04And it buzzes out. Yeah, it is. It is. Hold on.
SPEAKER_03Well, what's other ones?
SPEAKER_04Um, it says that sounds like there's many. Well, I was looking it up, and there's another one for like uh I wouldn't have thought of one, but now that you mention it, I know all of them. I know. These are the Netflix one for sure, right? The Netflix one.
SPEAKER_03What about like phone? I wonder if you know how certain phone rings remember back in like the dilo do.
SPEAKER_04Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_03That was one. That was one. I mean, this is universal. Everybody knows these. So in my case, I thought of it as a as a jingle, basically, just a jingle without words, but it turns out that a jingle without words can be a sonic logo, and now I think we're all a little wiser.
SPEAKER_04We are. We're like, that's a sonic logo.
SPEAKER_03What's funny is that you thought to research other ones, and I was just like, oh, that's a sonic logo. Move on. Well, that's why we're such a good team. I agree. Me especially.
SPEAKER_04You you you agree especially, or you being the better part of the team, which is hysterical. Uh-huh. Well, you know what? I mean, come on. I mean, come on. I swear to God. That could be part of our merch. We need to come up with more merch t-shirts. And the one t-shirt will just say, I mean, come on. Or we could have we could have um Hugo little merches.
SPEAKER_03Oh, Hugo. We could have little Hugo's Hugo jingles. Little Hugos with the little underbite.
SPEAKER_04He's got a good under.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah, we could do that. Um, okay, so speaking of bite, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Nice segue. I know you have to do that.
SPEAKER_03That reminds us of that, I know, speaking of segues. That reminds me of um, first of all, it reminds me of honeycomb because it has a big, big bite. But second of all, Red Bull, I would also say has a bite. Yes, it does. Wouldn't you say so that it does?
SPEAKER_04I would say, and I mixed it. I I I had it once at a bar. I was like, I like something sweet. And they're like, well, you shouldn't have it with a little vodka. And I was like, hmm, okay, how good could it be? It's delicious. Well, it tastes like a sweet tart. Oh my god, yeah, it's wonderful. I don't know how people aren't drinking it all the time. I would be a menace to society if I drank it all the time.
SPEAKER_03Tiny, um, I would like to hear your jingle for Red Bull. All right, here I go. Okay. Reddy said Red Bull. Ooh, that's really good. Do it again. Reddy said Red Bull. Ranny said Red Bull.
SPEAKER_04No, no, no, no, no.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, because I think that that's you're like Randy Bull.
SPEAKER_04No, you gotta stop. Ranny said Red Bull. I think something happened to you when you were younger, and I just don't know because I was there and I didn't see it. Cruel older sister tormented me. Protected you from the hordes of people who are like, that girl is bananas. And I was like, Don't you make fun of my sister? Yeah, no, but don't make fun of my sister.
SPEAKER_03There was one time that um I was hanging out with a friend, and this person was being not nice to me, and Heidi whipped open the garage door and yelled at her. And I was like, that's pretty kick ass. I didn't know that you were there. But now anyway.
SPEAKER_04Wait, I don't remember this.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I can't tell you the person's name because they might be a fan of jingle all the way. But if they are, they'll know who they were and what they did. I don't remember then I don't remember that. Um, it was it was a sassy friend that I had in elementary school. I don't tolerate sass. She doesn't tolerate sass. And this person was was being sort of like snarky to me. And Heidi was behind the garage door. You must have been like getting your bike to go out or something. And so you heard it and you whipped open the garage door, and you were like, I don't remember what you said, but it was something where you told her off. And I was like, Well, we were both very surprised.
SPEAKER_02And I was like, Yeah. Yeah, take that stance. And you like rode away and she turned back at me, and we were like, So, anyway, do you want to ride bikes?
SPEAKER_03But that, but I bet she chilled out, right? I'm sure she did. I don't recall, which means that I didn't get beaten up. Um, she's even worse. Oh, so I assume it it's it's smoothed, it's smoothed out. I never got beat up. Wow. No. But, anyways, so so so let's hear yours. And he said, Red Bull.
SPEAKER_04No. Jazz hands, McGee. No, that's not jazz hands. That's like, yeah. Um, why don't we hear yours? Why don't you get off of my promise? Get off my front lawn. What do you got?
SPEAKER_03So, so mine goes like this. Red Bull gives you wings now. Look, uh-huh. I know that I used their tagline. And I think I told you when we were coming up with this. So this may be disqualified. And if it is, I understand. I plead my case to our listeners, but let me explain this, okay? I went through all of the emotions, right? I went through there were so many like, you know, crumpled up pieces of paper next to a, you know, trash can, because I just couldn't get it. And I almost was going to say, I can't, I can't do it. And the reason why I can't do it, I couldn't do it, is because there was nothing in my mind that beats Red Bull Gives You Wings. I love everything about it. There's nothing that could improve upon it. Unless, of course, which is why I went from that this is such a trailblazing episode, and that I went with a sonic logo, because it's like if it only had like for the NBC, it's like, well, it doesn't have words. In this case, the words are the right ones. It just needs a memorable melody, and that memorable melody should be one that plays off of wings. And the wings should be ethereal, it should be like an angelic chorus. Red Bull gives you wings. And it's just lofty, wonderful angelic voices that do it and lean into their branding. I'd like to pause here. I fully expect I fully expect that some people are gonna say, nope, she crossed the line. I hear you, I understand. Were you the kid that if you forgot to do your book report, you could totally whip one up and get like an A? Yes, but that's not what this is. And if you look at when I recorded this in my voice memos, which I will submit to the court as evidence, in my voice memo, I recorded this on August 23rd.
SPEAKER_04Right. And what I contend, ladies and gentlemen of the jury, what I contend is that my sister recorded this as a note for herself to come back to, then forgot about it, went out riding her bike, left her bike outside in the rain, borrowed some of my clothes, got into trouble, sassed mom and dad. Well, never dad. She was a mom sasser only. She did not have a dad channel for sassing. Went off with her friends, did whatever, and then went like, oh crap. It's because now I do like I do like the sound of it, but I don't think you can just say their words back to them and call it a new slogan. But I'm I am with you that I like the sound of it. Did you know that there was a Red Bull, that Red Bull was sued?
SPEAKER_03I did. And that's all the more reason why I'm like, man, I am really sticking my neck out here, right? Because they were sued for that exact slogan. Now, first of all, I think it's a little prepostero that they would literally say, Well, it doesn't give you wings. And now, granted, they were saying like it doesn't give you any, you know, superhuman, like any physiological advantages. It's basically just caffeine and like whatever. And Red Bull was like, Well, that's sort of nonsense. But they say, look, you know, we stand by our witty, clever jingle. And that's what do they say, witty, truthful, and accurate. That's all the more saying, like, I'm sorry, we have something here. We are leaning into Red Bull, gives you wings. By the way, their top competitor is monster with the like claws and da-da-da. So to think about the like angel devil relationship, whatever you want to call it, um, I love the I love sticking with it. I think it's the right thing. And I love the idea of being like, no, we're not backing down. That's what that's what it is. Rather than change our tagline, we'll merely bring in a melody that does it justice. So while it's a risky move, friends, I believe it's the right one. Heidi, when you were researching Red Bull, what's the name of the Austrian marketing executive who discovered it? The drink that was created in uh Thailand? What's his name?
SPEAKER_04Oh, I do not know his name. Is it what's his name? Don't make fun of somebody's name. Okay. Be careful, Bob.
SPEAKER_00His name is Dietrich Matachitz. No, it's not. Yes, it is.
SPEAKER_04Oh my god. No, it is not. Yes, it is.
SPEAKER_02It's Dietrich Matachitz. And this one I was like, oh my god, I can't wait. I can't wait until we do Red Bull.
SPEAKER_03I'm like, I'm sure Heidi saw this at the same time, and I'm just dying to get into this.
SPEAKER_04Wow, Dietrich Mata Shitz.
SPEAKER_03Oh my goodness. There's nothing funny about that. I'm sure he's a wonderful man. Clearly, he's very he was very good at um, you know, marketing energy drinks.
SPEAKER_04Man, that is hysterical. Poor made a shits. That's awful.
SPEAKER_02Made a shits. Good job, Dietrich.
SPEAKER_00At least it's not take a shit.
SPEAKER_04Or give a shits. Give a shits would be a great last name.
SPEAKER_00Hey, hey. Go tell, go tell Dietrich give a shits. You know what else?
SPEAKER_03I don't give a shit. We could put that, that could be something that we have on our merch.
unknownOh my god.
SPEAKER_03That would be pretty damn good. It would be pretty good. But so anyway, so the story, of course, is that there was a precursor to Red Bull um in the 70s in Thailand. A duck farmer turned pharmaceutical entrepreneur invented it for truck drivers and factory workers to keep them energized. And then a gentleman discovered it. Well, he, an Austrian marketing executive, discovered it as a cure for jet lag. And then together they went into business. And um the two bulls and sun emblem comes from the original design. It was originally in glass bottles. And then they modernized it and streamlined. It was originally in glass bottles, you said? It was originally in glass bottles in Thailand, yeah. And then they um put it in the very, very iconic um, you know, blue cans, added the carbonation, etc., made it less sweet. And that's the Red Bull that we all know and love today. But I would argue, hey, Red Bull, you're doing everything right.
SPEAKER_04Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Like I said, you're doing everything right. And so that's why I'm like, you know, just lean into that and and keep it going. So again, I may get disqualified. It's it's a it's a you know, well, we'll let the people decide. We will take it to the people, but before we do that, we gotta figure out our product for next week.
SPEAKER_04Yes, we do.
SPEAKER_03Let us look skis.
SPEAKER_04Loading, computing, computing, computing. What are our options? Okay, Trader Joe's. Oh, I like Trader Joe. Oh my god, we just hit mom's mom, just started jumping around. And like when you're at like when you like a celebrity.
SPEAKER_03Whoa, oh, Trader Joe's. Okay, okay. Yeah, nice. All right, all right. Um, they don't have any kind of a jingle today, do they? Um Trader Joe's. Heidi Blows. Oh no, I'm giving it away. I mean, forget you heard that.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, that's what you're gonna come with, and your fan base is gonna be like, whoopdy, I love it. I mean, come on.
SPEAKER_03Amnesia Ray, amnesia ray. My fan base, my fan base. No, they're out there. Well, janglers, janglers, oceana. Thank you so much for sticking with us, putting up with my sister's antics, uh-huh. Learning a little bit about Sonic logos and about Red Bull.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Remember, pretty awesome, creativity is to be rewarded in this uh little forum of ours. But vote as you like. So, anyways, okay. Well, may the best jingle win. And boy, howdy, we've got two good ones for you um this week. Thank you so much for listening. Um, and everyone, jingle away, jingle away.
